engineers in the making

1130hrs
ikea people came. the whole delivery process took less than 5 minutes. that makes their delivery charges, rounding up to 5 minutes, SGD10.00 per minute. wow.

or.

i have 3 items. that makes the charges SGD16.67 per item. wow.

or.

SGD3.34 per item per minute. 3.34 $/t*unit, where t is in minutes. 3.34wow/(wow*wow)

1145hrs
started to fix the table. okay. 4 table leg + 1 table top. each table leg has 5 screws. easy. just screw it and be done with it.

1230hrs
easy. easy my foot. or hand. or ass. easy myasshandfoot.
i have to shift my whole body mass of 85kg x 9.81N/kg = 833.85N. since i'm living on the 6th floor, maybe that makes less force. maybe 85kg x 9.8095N/kg = 833.8075N. so it's less. i should have bring the table top down to first floor to assemble it before bringing it up. oh well.

notice that handkerchief? it's the resultant logical deduction of this situation here:
as you can see, i probably had a first-degree or second-degree burn. ikea screwed me instead.

1258hrs
"elo."
"yo."
"do you by any chance have any power drill or screwdriver thingie at your home?"
"no."
"okay."
*random guy rambling stuff*
"ok bye."
"bye."

dammit james. you should have one!! argghhh. =(

1315hrs
fucked. no more strength left. went down to the nearby community lot (sounds a lot like the sims games =p) to purchase something. something that i've learnt in engineering class. or physics. yay me. real-life application of stuff i've learnt. yayness +1

1325hrs
fixing the table.

1330hrs
fixed. all 4x5=20 screws. within 5mins. tighten and ready to be used. i show you why. pardon my crude scribbling though.guess what i've bought. lolz.

the stuff with length d2. yesh. i've been using the stuff with length d1. that's why.

now. given,

torque, T = force, F x distance, d

naturally, holding force F constant, the torque T generated by both screwdriver1 and screwdriver2, respectively, is therefore,

T1 = F1d1 ... 1
T2 = F2d2 ... 2

since F1 = F2 (experimentally adjusted), and solving the simultaneous equation 1 and 2, we have,

T1/d1 = T2/d2 ... 3

since d1 is approximately 3/4 of d2 (as deduced from the diagram), that makes:

4T1/3d2 = T2/d2

eliminating d2,

T2 = 4/3 * T1

that's 33% more torque generated.

on a sidenote, that screwdriver 2 costs SGD1.50. that's 22% increased torque per SGD1.00 spent.

smart.

HOWEVER.

a smarter choice would be asking ikea to fix the freaking table themselves, which would cost me 6% of the table's price. that is, 6% of SGD39.00 = SGD2.34

that SGD2.34 will save me at least 2hrs. and another SGD1.50. so that makes a difference of SGD0.42 per hour. or SGD0.007 per minute of savings compared to my current situation.

well. to finish off,

IKEA(R) Vika Amon Table Top, SGD19.00

IKEA(R) Vika Curry Table Leg, SGD20.00

Guo Yi(R) 6x150mm Hardened, Magnetic (+) Screwdriver, SGD1.50

the stupid experience of fixing a table, buying a screwdriver, drunk a tin of green tea, wasted 2 hours and having the energy to blog it in engineering terms,

priceless.
